Why a Shower Head Loses Flow—and What to Check First
Share
Quick answer: Start at the shower head: remove visible scale, clean the screen or inlet only as the maker allows, and check whether the restriction is actually upstream. Do not drill out flow restrictors or assume a new shower head will fix low pressure caused by a closed valve, clogged filter, plumbing issue, or supply problem.
Separate pressure from flow
“Low pressure” is often used for several different problems. If every faucet is weak, the issue may be building supply or a valve. If only one shower is affected, the head, hose, diverter, or local screen becomes more likely. If flow starts strong and fades, sediment or a restriction may be accumulating. Note whether the problem appears on hot water, cold water, or both.
Clean without damaging the finish
- Turn the shower off and let the fixture cool.
- Unscrew the head by hand if possible; protect the finish with a cloth if pliers are necessary.
- Rinse the inlet screen and nozzles. Use a soft brush to remove loose mineral scale.
- Only use a descaling product if the manufacturer's instructions and the product label allow it for that material. Never mix acids with bleach or other cleaners.
- Rinse thoroughly, reinstall with the correct washer, and check for leaks.
When cleaning is not the answer
Do not force a stuck connection, pierce silicone nozzles with a sharp object, or remove a flow-control component to chase more output. A damaged seal can create a leak inside the wall. Call a licensed plumber for a concealed leak, sudden whole-home change, rusty water, recurring blockage, or a fixture that cannot be removed safely.
Choose a replacement by fit and use
Before replacing the head, verify connection size, hose length, mounting method, and whether you want handheld, fixed, or dual use. “High pressure” in a product title is not a guarantee for every home's supply conditions. A multi-function head can change spray feel, but it cannot overcome a closed valve or undersized supply line.
