How to Use a Garden Sprayer Safely: Label-First Checklist
Share
Before using any garden sprayer, identify the exact sprayer model and read both its manual and the label on the liquid being applied. A powered sprayer is not automatically compatible with every fertilizer, herbicide, or pesticide, and pressure or nozzle settings do not replace the label’s directions.
Before filling
- Confirm the product label permits the intended location, plant, target, and application method.
- Use only liquids allowed by the sprayer instructions. Do not combine products unless their labels explicitly direct you to do so.
- Check the manual for filling, assembly, and operation; wear the protective equipment specified by the label.
- Keep children, pets, food, and bystanders away from the mixing and application area.
During application
Apply only to the intended treatment area and follow the product label’s weather, wind, distance, and re-entry directions. Avoid allowing spray or runoff to reach storm drains, waterways, or neighboring areas. The U.S. EPA explains how wind can carry pesticide spray off target and recommends practices to reduce drift and runoff.
After spraying
Follow the chemical label and sprayer manual for cleanup, rinsing, leftover product, and storage. Do not pour rinse water into a drain or waterway; use the label’s disposal instructions. Store the sprayer and chemicals as directed, in their original labeled containers where applicable.
